Ultrapure Water Production

The treatment of drinking water into high-purity water for electrolysis is carried out in multiple process stages and combinations, depending on the feed water quality. Precision engineering from the very beginning.

  • Pre-filtration (e.g., backwash filters, sand filters, activated carbon & ultrafiltration)
  • Water softening systems (alternatively with antiscalant dosing)
  • Desalination >99% via reverse osmosis CO₂ removal using membrane degassing
  • Full deionization via electrodeionization (CEDI) or a second RO stage
  • Storage and distribution of high-purity water via a downstream buffer tank
  • Polisher – innovative plug-&-play system for easy replacement
  • TOC treatment (optional)

Efficient Recirculation Purification

Maintaining water quality within PEM electrolysis systems requires efficient recirculation purification. This process removes ions released during electrolysis, such as metal ions and fluoride, using a dedicated recirculation purification system.

  • Process water cooling unit (optional)
  • Ultrapure resin polisher for continuous desalination to <0.1 µS/cm
  • Particle filtration <1 µm Plug & Play system for quick polisher replacement
  • Degassing unit for residual removal of H₂ and O₂ (optional) Modular system solutions

Alkaline Elektrolysis (AEL)

In alkaline electrolysis (AEL), a potassium hydroxide solution (20–40% KOH) serves as the electrolyte. When an electrical voltage is applied, water at the cathode is split into hydrogen and hydroxide ions (OH⁻). The OH⁻ ions migrate to the anode, where they react to form oxygen and water. This process is ideal for sustainable hydrogen production.

Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolysis (PEM)

The proton exchange membrane (PEM) serves as the electrolyte and enables precise hydrogen production. Unlike AEL, where both electrodes are immersed in the electrolyte, PEM electrolysis supplies water only to the anode. There, water is split into oxygen and H⁺ protons. These protons migrate through the membrane to the cathode, where they combine with electrons to form pure hydrogen.

Anion Exchange Membrane Electrolysis (AEM)

AEM Electrolysis operates similarly to AEL, using a potassium hydroxide solution (approx. 1% KOH) as the electrolyte. When an electric voltage is applied, water molecules migrate through the membrane to the cathode, where they are reduced to hydrogen and hydroxide ions (OH⁻). The OH⁻ ions return to the anode, where they release oxygen.
